We've been testing mattresses for over 50 years. Having tested hundreds in that time, we know how to sort the best from the rest.
Which? is independent – we work for our members, not brands or advertisers. To keep our reviews free from bias, we pay for all the mattresses ourselves. We don't accept freebies from product manufacturers or retailers.
We test mattresses in a lab, not a bedroom. Our tests are impartial and objective - we test every mattress in the same way to the same standard making them easy to compare.
Our mattress recommendations are influenced only by these independent test results so our advice is unbiased and can help you avoid avoid costly mistakes or ending up with a nightmare mattress.

If you suffer from back pain, seek medical or professional advice.

If you're not sold on a memory foam mattress, but fancy getting a feel for the how the foam moulds to the shape of your body, consider buying a memory foam mattress topper. A decent topper can really change the feel of a mattress, especially a mattress that you find too firm.
In a mattress topper survey of 2,000 Which? Connect panel members*, 59% of owners bought a topper to make their current mattress more comfortable. And a whopping 85% said using one made a difference to the comfort of their mattress.
Our mattress topper tests reveal which toppers make the biggest difference with how a mattress feels, how much it alters the body support and what difference it makes to pressure distribution. The best make a big difference, which means you'll be able to make a new mattress feel softer or revamp an older mattress.

We'd expect every mattress to last 8-10 years, no matter what it's made of.
Our tests show that memory foam mattresses are pretty durable. Along with hybrid mattresses, they generally fare better in our durability tests than pocket sprung mattresses. That's because the materials used tend to bounce back and regain their shape more easily, while springs can sometimes compress and start to sag.
It's important to ensure you follow the correct care instructions and rotate your foam mattress regularly. Some foam mattresses need to be turned more often in the first few months than other types, to avoid a dip in the middle.
