Which brand makes the most comfortable mattresses?

In our lab, we test body support, durability and pressure distribution, and independently assess how firm or soft a mattress feels, plus much more. But mattress comfort is harder to measure, because everyone's idea of comfort is subjective.

This is where our survey comes in. As well as asking Which? members to rate their mattress brand, we also ask them to report on how comfortable their mattress is.

Our unique survey results on this question are very revealing.

  • Only 8 out of 18 mattress brands in our survey received a full five-star rating for comfort.
  • The most common reason given for replacing a mattress was because it was uncomfortable (26%).
  • One of the top reasons why members purchased a new mattress is because it felt comfortable in the shop. The number one reason? It had a Which? recommendation.

Should you shop for a mattress online or in-store?

Buying a mattress

Our survey revealed that Which? members are divided on where they shopped for their mattresses: 47% bought their mattress in-store, while 53% shopped online.

If you can, do both. Visiting a store lets you try out mattress materials and different levels of firmness, so it's easier to figure out what works best for you.

Try to lie on mattresses in your normal sleep position for around 10 minutes — it's worth feeling slightly silly to guarantee a good night's sleep.

Around half of mattress buyers visited a store to try out a mattress before buying, while a third said they bought their mattress at least partly because it felt comfortable in the shop.

However, buying online can, in some cases, offer more flexibility — especially if something is wrong with the mattress.

That's because brands such as Emma, Eve and Simba, recognise that their online-only offer limits your ability to try before you buy.

That's why most offer trial periods, some as lengthy as up to 200 nights or even a full 356 days, to give you a better chance to test your mattress. During this time you can usually return the mattress for a refund or exchange – just make sure you read the terms and conditions carefully before buying.

Mattresses from popular brands reviewed in depth

How we research mattress brands and shops

In October 2023, we asked 3,530 Which? members who had bought a mattress in the past five years to tell us about their experiences. To work out customer scores for mattress brands, we asked what brand of mattress members owned, whether they were satisfied with it and whether they'd recommend it to friends or family.

We also asked members how they'd rate mattress shops for quality of advice, range of mattresses, value for money and ease of arranging delivery.

If you're not yet a member, join Which? today to find out everything you need to know about buying the best mattress and secure a good night's sleep for years to come.
